Ghostbusters Cake

Baking ingredients

  • 16 oz Self-raising four
  • 16 oz Caster sugar
  • 16 oz Butter
  • 8 Eggs
  • Grated rind of a lemon
  • Vanilla extract

Decorating ingredients

  • 1.5 kg Renshaw White Ready to Roll Icing
  • Green food colouring
  • Blue food colouring

Instructions

Step 1

Make a six-inch round vanilla sponge and an eight-inch lemon sponge. Split and fill both with buttercream.

Step 2

Cover both cakes with white fondant, then insert cake dowels into the lemon cake within the area that will be covered by the vanilla and trim these to the height of the cake. Stack the vanilla cake on top and fix in place with a little buttercream.

Step 3

Make Marshmallow Man out of modelling paste by rolling balls paste and shaping from there. Roll a large ball of white paste, cup your hands into a V shape, then gently roll the paste until it forms a cone for Marshmallow Man’s body.

Step 4

Roll smaller balls of white icing out, decreasing in size, and flatten these slightly so they look more disc-like. Attach together with cooled boiled water so that the top of the arm is thicker, and gets thinner towards the hand. Gently insert a cocktail stick into the wider end of the arm without poking it through the other end of the arm. Leave these to one side for now.

Step 5

Make around 6 more discs of white icing and stack these in 2 piles to create the legs, using a little water to stick together, and to stick the body on top. Use extra support from a cocktail stick if you need it.

Step 6

Roll another round ball of white paste for the head, and add any facial expressions in at this point. Twist another cocktail stick gently into the body, leaving enough left out to support the head later.

Step 7

Add any more decorations you want now before assembling the body, such as hat and scarf.

Step 8

Once you’ve made both arms, insert into the body, then gently place the head onto the exposed cocktail stick.

Step 9

To make Slimer, add a lime/fluorescent coloured gel to white modelling paste, or create a 50/50 mix of Lime Green icing and white modelling paste. Roll out extra strips to add a slime effect to the rest of the cake.

Step 10

Mix grey food colouring in with some white icing, roll out oblong shapes from this and leave to set. Once dry, paint windows on them. Make the Ghostbusters logo and leave to dry, and finish by placing your models on the cake.
