The Flash Birthday Cake

Baking ingredients

  • 225 g plain flour
  • 225 g caster sugar
  • 85 g cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Eggs
  • 125 ml vegetable oil
  • 250 ml buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 250 ml boiling water

Decorating ingredients

  • Buttercream icing
  • 500 g Renshaw Poppy Red Ready to Roll Icing
  • 250 g Renshaw Yellow Ready to Roll Icing
  • 250 g Renshaw White Ready to Roll Icing
  • 400 g Renshaw White Royal Icing

Instructions

Baking the sponge:

Step 1

Mix all dry ingredients together. Mix all wet ingredients together, except the water.

Step 2

Mix dry and wet ingredients together. Mix in water and pour into two round tins.

Step 3

Bake in oven 150°C for 40 mins or until cooked through. Leave to cool completely.

Decorating the cake:

Step 4

Stack cakes with buttercream icing and cover the outside of the cakes with a thin layer of buttercream too.

Step 5

Knead the red icing until pliable and roll out over a little icing sugar until wide enough to cover the cake. Use your rolling pin to lift this over the sponge and smooth over with your hands. You can use a smoother to get a neat finish.

Step 6

Knead and roll out the white icing and use a circle template or large cutter to cut out the white circle for the middle. Attach this with a little water.

Step 7

Knead and roll out the yellow icing. Cut a strip from this and place it around the edge of the white circle. Use a lightning shape template to cut out the centre of The Flash logo.

Step 8

Cut out a name for the cake using letter cutters from the rest of the yellow icing.

Step 9

Pipe a border around the bottom of the cake with white royal icing.
