Baking ingredients

  • 450 g butter
  • 450 g caster sugar
  • 450 g self-raising flour
  • 9 eggs
  • 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 250 g buttercream
  • 1 jam of your choice

Decorating ingredients

  • 500 g Renshaw White Ready to Roll Icing
  • Black gel food colouring
  • Red gel food colouring
  • Silver food paint
  • Toy football

Instructions

Step 1

Cream butter and sugar, then add eggs one at a time until fully and incorporated.

Step 2

Add vanilla, then sieve in flour until combined.

Step 3

Line and grease a 10 inch square tin. Fill 2/3 full and bake at 160°C for approx 1 hr 30 min or until a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool for 10 mins then transfer to a wire rack.

Step 4

Take a clean football boot and draw around it onto card to create a template, or you can find boot templates online.

Step 5

Once the cake is cool, use the template to cut out the boot shape from the sponge.

Step 6

Cut around the template, being careful to keep the shape neat. Cut a second shape from the cake.

Step 7

Use buttercream and jam to fill and stack the two shapes.

Step 8

Create another template of the side of the boot. Use this to carve around the stacked layers of sponge. You can keep your off cuts for cake pops!

Step 9

Once you are happy with the overall shape, cover with a thin layer of buttercream. Then knead and roll out the white icing and cover the cake with this. Smooth over any bumps carefully.

Step 10

Make some red and black icing using your colours. The black will be the inside of the boot. Attach this with a little buttercream. Alternatively you could buy ready made colours of icing.

Step 11

The red icing will be the laces. An extruder is handy for this or you can use a smoother to roll an even strip. Use a straw to create lace holes and add the laces. Use a stitching tool or a cocktail stick to create the stitching effect.

Step 12

Cut some white strips and attach with water. Once dry use the silver paint to highlight them.

Step 13

Add any detail to the board, I used a toy football but you could add grass, a name or message or a team badge. Enjoy :)
