Hi bakers! It’s been a mad start to 2020, and like everyone else, we’ve been caught up in a fever of self-betterment to start off the year. Don’t worry if you’ve broken your resolutions – our gym membership cards are already collecting dust somewhere, so you’re not alone.
We know that improving yourself is important, but it’s equally crucial to treat yourself when you deserve it (or even when you don’t). This month we’re encouraging you to give yourself a pat on the back and treat yourself to some truly indulgent cakes.
Rich flavours? Check. Sugar? We’ve got it. Calorie count? Sorry, we’ve lost our calculator. No, these cakes aren’t for every day, but life is tough, so why not treat ourselves every now and then? Get your teeth stuck into these decadent desserts:
This might be one to keep from your personal trainer. BBC Good Food have a recipe for this irresistible-looking chocolate cake. Dense, moist and soft, with a sponge so rich that it’s perfectly poised to soak up your willpower and draw you in for another slice.
If you find your mouth is already watering, you’ll be happy to know that it’s a relatively straightforward bake. You can even make it easier (and perhaps more palatable for non-dark chocolate fans) by swapping out the recipe’s ganache for some of our lush Chocolate Flavour Frosting.
This recipe actually includes bananas and cherries, which is two of your five a day! It also includes copious amounts of sugar, ice cream, caramel and chocolate…but who’s counting really? Bon Appetit’s banana split ice cream cake is the stuff of dreams, with tons of different sweet treats crammed into one dessert. It’s not for the faint hearted – but don’t let that stop you.
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right? Far flung from rich chocolate and ice cream, this Mojito cake from Olive Magazine is devilish in an entirely different way, infusing the classic summery cocktail with a light sponge coated with buttercream.
Getting this one right might require a little more finesse, just so you can nail the light texture and balance of flavours, but it’ll undoubtedly be worth it. Again, some of our Frosting could help you get the same results with a little more ease, and if you’re really looking to impress, you can add a little shimmer and shine with some Glitter from Rainbow Dust. Please eat responsibly.
We’re counting this one as visual indulgence too, as it’s doing loads for our eyes as well as our tastebuds. Taking the crown for prettiest cake in this blog is this Apple Toffee Crunch Cake from The Cake Blog, which is full of dense flavour thanks to a careful combo of apples, pecan, toffee, cinnamon and more.
It’s intensive work, but there’s a delicious payoff on the other end – and remember, we’re all about treating ourselves right now.
From a biscuit point of view, Oreos are already overkill. Two chocolatey cookies with a cream filling? Lush. Now put those Oreos into a cake, combine that with a brownie layer and another cake layer filled with chocolate chips, and then decorate with frosting and more biscuits, and if you’ve done it right, you’ll have something like this cake from Life, Love and Sugar.
Everything about this cake screams indulgence. It pulls no punches with its combination of rich chocolatey flavours and complementary textures. Give it a go and step into a world of sweet, sugary bliss.
And there you have it. We’ve only scratched the surface, so why don’t you get in touch with us and share your most intoxicatingly indulgent treats with us on social? Tag us in your posts or send them to @renshawbaking.
