Monday 10th November 2014
We’ve just arrived back from one of the biggest sugarcraft and cake decorating shows in the UK, Cake International Birmingham at the NEC 7-9 November, and we had a great weekend.
Ann Pickard (Ann Pickard Sugar Craft) and Renshaw’s Mark Bosworth talk about our experience at Cake International and the fun of modelling with icing in this video:
We returned for another year with our Renshaw School and welcomed budding sugarcrafters to our Christmas themed modelling classes with Ann Pickard, Stacey Anderson, Jacqui Kelly and our very own Jayne Frost among others. The festive spirit was definitely in the air as we learned how to make Reindeers, Robins and Owls in Santa Hats!
At the show we commemorated the WWI Centenary by asking attendees to craft their own unique Poppy from Ready to Roll Icing in exchange for a donation to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2014. We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who crafted a Poppy, and left moving messages alongside them. Thank you to those who took part and donated, and to The Cake Decorating Company for their support in making this happen.
On the Saturday evening we were excited to attend Cake Masters Awards 2014, also at the NEC, where we sponsored the Novelty Cake Award. We loved seeing the fun entries for this category and it was very hard to pick a winner from the 4 finalists, but in the end Avalon Yarnes from Avalon Cakes was our choice. Avalon is the owner, the artist, the baker and the entire backbone of Avalon Cakes. A self taught artist with cake as her primary passion, she is continously challenging herself to go above and beyond to create unique creations.
Special mentions to our other 3 finalists whose applications were of an excellent standard – Debbie Goard of Debbie Does Cakes, Heather Sherman of Art2Eat Cakes and Vicki Smith of Incredible Edibles.
Over the weekend attendees at the show also helped to build a gigantic cupcake dress at the Cake Masters Magazine stand with Renshaw Flower & Modelling Paste, which looked amazing. We enjoyed seeing all of the cakes on display over the weekend and can’t wait to return next year.
