Thursday 22nd May 2014
This month, we’ve been all about the catwalks and classic trends in both fashion and sugar craft, using pastel colours, ombre motifs and lace designs to inspire our own cake creations.
We asked you to turn your hand to style-inspired cakes and let your creative side run wild, for the chance to win a £100 Renshaw Baking voucher and a fashion-inspired ‘Pret-a-Portea’ afternoon tea for two at The Berkeley in London!
With five £25 vouchers being offered as runner up prizes too, we saw handbag cakes galore, spiked heeled cake creations and multiple make up cases, not to mention, all the buttons, bows and intricately crafted models to showcase our own fashion designs, we were seriously wowed with the skill, style and flawless finishes you showcased as part of our Cake Catwalk Competition.
We’ve highlighted all our favourites below, but to see all our wonderful entries, check out our Cake Catwalk video…
Competition Winner
Chanel Couture Inspired Cake by Sugar Ruffles (@sugarruffles)
Taken straight from the catwalk, this pretty in pink cake – a key colour for Spring Summer 2014 – makes beautiful use of sugar paste cut outs and flowers over several tiers, replicating beautifully the Chanel couture dress which inspired it.
Runners Up
Gucci Handbag Cake by Lisa Potter
The intricate detailing on this cake, from the carefully scored and highlighted Gucci pattern to the freakily realistic handle, all go towards making this 50th birthday cake by the talented Lisa Potter a worthy runner up. Beautifully presented too, we wouldn’t know whether to wear it or eat it.
Fashion Cupcakes by Kim Musgrove
High heel shoes, handbags and make up brushes – you couldn’t wish for a more girly batch of cupcakes. Immaculately modelled and beautifully presented, all enhanced through the copious use of edible glitter, these would make a great gift for a fashion conscious lady.
Leopard Print Swim Wear by Jen (@bakearamaUK)
A cheeky entry to our cake catwalk competition, this leopard print speedo cake certainly put a smile on our face, not least because it showcases one of 2014’s big sugar craft trends – cake painting. Using a classic fabric motif, delicately painted and built up to provide real depth of colour, the skill on show here is just spectacular.
Steam Punk Cake by Val Bonney
The unique Steam Punk inspired theme of this cake creation caught our eye, and with the shaped cake, cog accessories crafted from sugar paste and the lustre dust embellished goggles, we couldn’t resist celebrating the creativity by awarding it one of our five runner up prizes.
Accessories Cake by Sandra Frearson
Simply decorated, making gorgeous use of the pastel shades that have been such a big hit on the high street this Spring, we loved the inclusion of the pearls, both around the base of the cake, and as a decoration, taking the popular jewel cake trend to the next level.
Which was your favourite cake, and if you were to make your own fashion-inspired cake, where would you look for inspiration?
