Renshaw meet the Royals

Thursday 18th July 2013

Last weekend’s glorious sunshine was the crowning glory of the Coronation Festival, held down at Buckingham Palace from Thursday 11 July through to Sunday 14 July in celebration of the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. The atmosphere inside the palace grounds was jubilant in the face of the sweltering heat, with Royal Warrant holders Diageo on hand with a refreshing cup of Pimms for the crowds and Jaguar bringing a touch of class with their classic British cars.

As Royal Warrant holders for our almond products, the Renshaw stand proved to be a popular attraction, with our own Claire Bailey’s marzipan flower demonstration admired by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie both, not to mention our snack pack marzipan bars disappearing faster than a freshly baked cake. Princess Anne particularly admired the specially created Coronation Cake, created by the talented team at Fiona Cairns, who masterminded the royal wedding cake back in 2011.

The Coronation crown cake created by Terry Tang Designer Cakes also proved a draw, with many passers-by stopping to be snapped with this most regal creation. Our food and drink theatre demonstrations also pulled in quite a crowd, with some excellent questions from home bakers and sugar craft aficionados alike. Determined to learn how to best cover a cake with sugar paste, our experts hints and tips were soon flying round the marquee, advising on how to prevent your icing cracking and where to best buy the tools needed to create a finish fit for a queen.

For our merry band of sugar crafters down at the Palace, the icing on the cake was the incredible experience of witnessing the spectacular evening galas that took place over the first three days, with Katherine Jenkins, Russell Watson and The Feeling all taking to the stage. The complete silence observed in waiting for the Queen to arrive was something to behold, and whilst an evening of entertainment is always a good way to let your hair down at the end of a day, we naturally celebrated the fabulous long weekend with a slice of cake.
