National Bundt Day Recipes

Tuesday 15th November 2016

So today is National Bundt Cake Day and for those of you that are eagle eyed, you will have spotted these appearing on the Great British Bake Off in recent seasons. This has led to a huge increase in popularity in the traditional Bundt cake with thousands of you giving it a go and sharing it with your fellow bakers on social media. So just what is a Bundt cake?

Bundt cakes are inspired by a traditional European cake known as Gugelhupf which was popular among communities in Germany, Austria and Poland. They are usually defined by the central tube which leaves a hole through the centre of the cake. The term Bundt was coined in North America and witnessed a huge rise in popularity in the 1960’s. In fact, they are one of the few cakes that are defined by their shape and not recipe, which leaves us bakers to go wild with fillings and toppings!

Due to the difficulty in frosting a ring shaped cake, Bundt cakes are typically served undecorated, glazed or dusted with icing sugar and make a nice alternative to frosted cakes. If you fancy giving these a try, we’ve put together a delicious collection of recipes you can rustle up at home.

Lemon and Blueberry Bundt Cake

Our first recipe was submitted by community member Chris Hunt and it pairs together a classic combination of lemon and blueberry. The blueberries and lemon zest provide a lovely filling and it is finished off with a drizzling of icing which can be as neat or as messy as you like. Perfect! You can get the recipe here.

Pumpkin Bundt Cake

We know that Halloween is over for another year but that still doesn’t mean we cannot enjoy the delights of pumpkins. This makes for a perfect autumn bake and would be ideal sliced up and enjoyed sat next to a roaring fire. We’ve used white chocolate and orange and black vermicelli for decoration but feel free to experiment and let us know what you come up with. Find the recipe here.

Mulled Wine Fruit Bundt Cake

With Christmas fast approaching we had to include at least one (okay, maybe two) festive recipes. This warm and spicy cake is perfect for the cold winter months and the blend of cinnamon and orange flavours is a real winner. Although this cake requires a few more ingredients than the others, do not let that put you off. Topped with white marzipan holly leaves and cherry halves it doesn’t just look the part, it tastes the part as well!

Christmas Wreath Cake

This tutorial is from Colin Starfish at Colin’s Time to Bake and he shows us how to make a chocolate and whiskey bundt cake decorated with green buttercream and ready to roll icing to get that perfect Christmas wreath look.
