Fun Ideas for Baking with the Kids

Monday 9th March 2015

Remember how much you used to enjoy afternoons when you were younger spent baking with mum or gran; mixing batter, rolling out fondant icing, melting chocolate and making a general mess? Chances are this is where you found your love for baking and cake decorating. How nice would it be to create those fun memories with your own children or grandchildren!

There’s something very special about passing on a recipe your mother taught you to your own children, and knowing that one day they’ll carry on the tradition and pass it on to their kids too. Many of us have an extra ingredient or twist we like to add to our cakes and bakes that makes it unique to us or to a family recipe.

Mother’s Day is a perfect time to dust off the apron and spend some quality time with the kids. Try out some of these fun ideas with the family:

Modelling with Icing or Marzipan

You can have so much fun modelling with fondant icing or
marzipan, there are so many different things to make and it’s a great feeling to see what you’ve achieved at the end. Animals are a great place to start with modelling and are perfect for keeping the little ones interested. You can add them to the top of cakes and cupcakes, or you can think of it as edible play dough and just enjoy being creative.

Why not try making a puppy from fondant or marzipan to get started:

Frosting Cupcakes

For a fun alternative to traditional cupcakes, have a go at making these unusual
Hamburger Cupcakes, or some summery looking Ice Cream Cupcakes. Mix up your cupcake ingredients with the kids, and once they’re baked you can get frosting and sprinkling. By now we imagine there’s just a little bit of mess in the kitchen, so ready-made frostings are ideal! The kids will love the chocolate and vanilla flavours, too.

Baking Biscuits

If you’re after a simple but tasty recipe to try baking with the children, look no further than these
Dipped Sprinkle Biscuits. There aren’t too many ingredients involved, and younger children will love kneading the dough and cutting out shapes. Once your biscuits are baked and cooled, you can add some bright and fun-looking decorations with colour melts and sprinkles.

For something a bit more creative, you could try baking and decorating
Gingerbread Men. Not only will they taste and smell amazing, but there are so many ways to decorate them using Ready to Roll Icing. You could decorate them to look like family and friends, or they could be in the colours of your favourite football team. Either way, they’re so much fun to make and even better to eat!
