Catwalk Inspired Cake Creations

Tuesday 13th May 2014

Inspiration for cake decorating design can come from the most unlikely of places. The bounty of nature, a favourite film or your current colour obsession can all go a long way in helping get the creative juices flowing, and give rise to some sweet ideas that help form the theme for your decorated cakes or bakes.

Fashion is a big source of inspiration, cited by both Mich Turner and Juliet Sear as fertile ground for generating new styles of cake, and over the past few years, have helped spear head the latest trends in sugar craft and home baking.

Geometric print – first seen on catwalks back in 2010 and hitting the high streets in a big way in 2012 – this year found its way into cake decorating design, and lace, a mainstay of the vintage fashion trend that won’t go away is being put to magnificent use on wedding cakes, where moulds and intricate royal icing detail can create a realistic interpretation of the real deal.

With fashion front of mind, our current crop of recipes are based on not only Spring Summer 2014 catwalk trends, but also all things current in sugar craft. Using our new range of Spring Ready to Roll Icing colours, which perfectly match this season’s colour palette, we’ve had fun with ombre hues, jewel brights and mismatch creations.

Pink Ombre Cake

Pink Ombre Roberto Cavalli

Much like this exquisite tonal number from Roberto Cavalli, we have taken our cues from both the catwalk and the current sugar craft obsession with all things ombre. Using our new Raspberry Pink Ready to Roll Icing, and mixing with white to create the graduated shades, we think this cake would make as much impact as a sparkly new dress.

Jewel Cake

Jewel Tom Ford

Jewel cakes have been big new in sugar craft circles for over a year now, and though slightly controversial, on account of the use of non-edible icings making up part of the cake decoration, when Tom Ford starts to make use of the motif, you know a trend has arrived. Using jewel bright colours in a mosaic pattern makes quite the impact, and based over our new Dusky Lavender Ready to Roll Icing makes for a stand out piece (of cake).

Powder Blue Lace Cake

Floral lace patterns and porcelain motifs are still big news in fashion and cake decorating, so riffing off this powder pink lacy dress from Burberry Prorsum, we put our new Powder Blue Ready to Roll Icing to good use, inspired by the pastel shades that are making waves this season. Easily recreated using lace moulds, or freestyling with royal icing if you have a steady hand, this beautiful cake would make a statement on any cake table.

Mismatch Cake

Footwear fashion should never be over looked, and these overlapping, mismatched colour patch shoes from the marvellous Manolo Blahnik, provided inspiration for our very own mismatch cake. Using some of our classic colours, and introducing the new Tropical Coral and Emerald Green Ready to Roll Icing, we think it makes quite the statement.

Which is your favourite piece (of cake) from the collection, and are you inspired to be more fashion forward in your cake decorating?
