Baking Industry Awards Results 2018

Thursday 6th September 2018

We’ve just celebrated our 14th year of sponsoring Celebration Cake Business of the Year at the Baking Industry Awards, with the 3 very talented finalists; Elaine’s Creative Cakes, Brown’s Cakes and Shuga Budz. We had a fantastic evening with a variety of baking businesses, recognising the hard work and talent of the nominees and winners.

Each year, independent judges review the work and business plan of the semi-finalists and oversee a ‘live judging’ day at the Renshaw Academy, where semi-finalists are invited in to complete final decorations on their award pieces and demonstrate their cake decorating skills. The independent judges this year were Sonia Young of the British Baker and Zoe Hopkinson of Zoe’s Fancy Cakes.

We’re now pleased to announce the winner of Celebration Cake Business of the Year 2018 is Elaine’s Creative Cakes!

WINNER: ELAINE’S CREATIVE CAKES

Elaine’s Creative Cakes is a small, family run business based in Urmston, Manchester, and has been established for just under 7 years. Elaine and her team produce bespoke wedding cakes and a variety of celebration cakes from simple, classic designs to fun and elaborate cakes with plenty of modelling involved. Elaine said; “As long as it fits out of the door we will do it!”

Elaine has developed her business year on year and has diversified her offering and branched into teaching sugarcraft courses. Elaine has been a confectioner for over 30 years but loves to learn new skills that keep her on her toes.

Elaine’s Creative Cakes have been a finalist in this category in 2016 and 2017, and the winning title for 2018 is well-deserved.

FINALISTS

BROWN’S CAKES

Brown’s Cakes are a small, friendly team based in Rochdale, providing cakes for all occasions and have been in business for 10 years. They won the title of Celebration Cake Business of the Year in 2015.

Natasha Brown has published a children’s storybook based on Brown’s Cakes, and it is illustrated with sugar paste models. They also won a competition with Cake Masters to design a cake to celebrate the Royal wedding of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle which was featured on the front cover of the magazine.

SHUGA BUDZ

Shuga Budz is a family-run cake shop in Wolverhampton led by a mother and daughter team, and they’ve been in business for over 10 years. The team’s specialities are their modelling skills and shaped cakes.

The team like to get together and think of creative ideas for competition pieces and several of them entered cakes at Cake International last year, achieving bronze, silver and 2 gold awards!

Shuga Budz plans to diversify their wedding cake offering in the next few years to cater for a variety of needs and budgets.
