Summer is here (sort of). And so it’s time for occasion cakes to come into play. The imaginative and playful themes that Easter and Valentine’s Day inspire are far behind us, and wedding and christening cake season comes in to play. Traditionally, white and ivory sugar paste covered concoctions were the order of the day, bedecked in ruffles, pearls, and lace.
Now, vintage themes, colourful icing and quirky toppers are becoming increasingly popular, with less traditional carrot and chocolate flavour bases are having a moment as well, though here at Renshaw HQ, we will always love the classic Victoria Sponge.
Nowhere is this trend more evident in the current crop of baby related cakes taking cake decorating circles by storm. Moving beyond the usual pinks and pastel blues, vibrant duck egg and amethyst ready to roll icing shades more frequently are being used to celebrate the arrival of new babies, whether at a baby shower, baby reveal party or christening.
Toppers also go beyond the traditional baby model motif, with bunting, buttons and bows and baby related paraphernalia all making their mark on the current crop of cakes.
Here at Renshaw, we’ve been getting creative, taking traditional baby items as inspiration like this towel shaped cake wrapped up in a pastel yellow bow, and playing around with moulds and embossers to create intricate lace and quilting patterns on our soon to be revealed classically styled christening cake.
